Possible Reactions and Risks
This is to ensure that you understand that during the applications of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), there are possible reactions which may occur during the treatment.
Possible reactions include:
Bruising: Some people experience slight bruising immediately after the acupuncture treatment or a few days after an acupuncture treatment has occurred. This can also include a hematoma. When using moxibustion or cupping, it is also possible to experience discoloration of the skin, in and around the treatment site.
Fainting: Some people may experience light headedness while receiving acupuncture. To ensure there is a reduced amount of fainting, we ask our patients to eat around 1-2 hours before treatment. (Fainting is usually due to low sugar levels)
Nausea: Some people may experience nausea. This feeling usually passes shortly after the needles are in. If nausea continues, the treatment will stop until the patient is ready to continue.
Risk of Infection: Infection is very rare when disposable needles are used. The Clean Needle Technique (CNT) protocol greatly reduces the risk of infection, and is both practised and monitored at Pink Lotus Acupuncture and Wellness Centre.
Stuck Needle: A stuck needle can happen if the needle is placed incorrectly or the muscle bears grip on the needle. This is easily corrected by either relaxing the muscle, or waiting for the patient to relax until the needle is able to come out.
Contraindicated Points: There are certain points on the body that are contraindicated for pregnancy. Should pregnancy be suspected please advise the practitioner prior to the treatment.
Miscellaneous: Please note that acupuncture and tuina massage are safe procedures; although bruising and post needling sensations may occur. Fainting may occur for new patients, due to nervousness, hunger or extreme tiredness. Chinese herbs are also very safe and effective when recommended by a qualified TCM practitioner. Occasional abdominal upset, diarrhoea, insomnia, and sweating may happen. This can be a response of the body to the treatment. Should you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to ask.
